Types of Trainers

 

1.The old guard
 

This trainer has been around for some time and has normally trained for a number of very wealthy owner breeders. Owner breeders have their owner stud farms and will ask the trainer to select a number of horses to be trained on his or her behalf. The Owner breeder will have a hands off approach and will delegate everything to the trainer. Consequently these trainers are not used to constant communications and if you are looking to get regular feed back on your horse you will be disappointed. 

 

2.The New Kid on the street

 

This trainer is young and enthusiastic and will be into new and interesting ways of training and communicating to owners. They will be looking for new owners and will offer a good service. The down side is that they have not yet established a track record.

 

3.The Ones that need your horse

 

This trainer will do and say anything to get your business. Once he has your horse don’t expect any straight talking. If you horse has an injury you will be the last to know yet you will still be pay full training fees.

 

4.The Ones that don’t need your horse

 

This trainer is probably very arrogant and successful but owners have to conform to how he / she works. Don’t question anything that they say or do otherwise you will be told to leave.

 

5.The up and coming.

 

This is the best trainer to go with but you might just be joining the stable too late. Most trainers have a limited amount of staff and as soon as success comes, all owners suffer, because they are not geared up to handle all the new horses and owners that come their way.

 

6.The commercial trainer.
 

There are very few of these but they will normally employ a marketing manger who will act as an interface with their owners so that they are looked after, even if the trainer can’t talk to the owners. They are peopling form a commercial background and not the archetypal trainer. Normally despised by the old guard and the racing industry but good for the ordinary person.
